A reception will be held by The City of London Corporation to celebrate the life of Archbishop Desmond Tutu on Tuesday 21st June

Archbishop Tutu rose to world-wide fame during the 1980s as an opponent of apartheid. His advocacy of non-violent opposition to apartheid was recognised by the award of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. Following the end of apartheid, Archbishop Tutu chaired the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. From 2007 until 2013, Archbishop Tutu chaired The Elders, an independent group of global leaders working together for peace and human rights. He was awarded the Templeton Prize in 2013 in recognition for his exceptional contribution to spiritual life.

In 2007 the Tutu Foundation UK was founded by Archbishop Tutu and the then Dean of Southwark Cathedral, to prevent and resolve conflict by providing facilitation and mediation services, building on the inspiration and knowledge of South African communities who sought reconciliation following the overthrow of apartheid. This event is taking place with the cooperation of the Tutu Foundation UK.

Archbishop Tutu spoke at Guildhall on several occasions. His last visit to Guildhall was to receive the Honorary Freedom of the City in November 2013.
