A state funeral for Jimmy Carter, the former U.S. president who passed away on Dec. 29 at the age of 100, took place at the Washington National Cathedral. U.S. President Joe Biden, who delivered a eulogy for Carter, declared Jan. 9 as a national day of mourning.
Following the funeral service, Carter’s remains returned to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, for a private funeral and burial at the Carter residence. Before the burial, the U.S. Navy honoured Carter’s service with a missing man formation flyover, recognising his time in the Navy and as commander-in-chief.
President Biden delivered a eulogy for his Democratic predecessor, with all living former presidents — Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump — in attendance.
Other notable political attendees included Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the House, John Thune, the incoming Republican Senate Majority Leader, and Democratic congressional leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Chuck Schumer.
