John Sergeant, a former Chief Political Correspondent for the BBC from 1992 to 2000 and ITN’s Political Editor from 2000 to 2002, is widely remembered as one of Britain’s most beloved broadcasters and authors. His illustrious career as a political journalist has been marked by both longevity and success. He has had the privilege of interviewing prominent political figures such as Prime Ministers Margaret Thatcher, John Major, and Tony Blair.
In recent years, John has rekindled his passion for light entertainment and has become a regular fixture on various popular programmes, including The One Show, Have I Got News For You, QI, Room 101, and the News Quiz. His appearances on Strictly Come Dancing, while not always successful due to his unique approach to ballroom dancing, garnered immense popularity from the audience.
Despite his occasional missteps, Sergeant’s determination and willingness to improve led him to continue practising and competing on the show. However, in Week 10, he decided to leave the competition, saying, “The trouble is that there is now a real danger that I might win the competition. Even for me, that would be a joke too far.”
In addition to his television appearances, John has also ventured into documentary filmmaking. His notable works include John Sergeant’s Tourist Trail, Tracks of Empire, which explores the history of the Indian Railways, and Britain’s First Photo Album, which delves into the pioneering photography of Francis Frith.
